Strengthening the Foundations of Ocean-Based Carbon Removal

A new Ocean Visions-led Blue Paper has just been released, outlining emerging principles for responsible marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). It’s a timely contribution to the evolving scientific and policy landscape — and one that aligns strongly with ONC’s own priorities around transparency, environmental safeguards, and long-term monitoring.

The paper brings together leading researchers and practitioners to propose a quality framework for ocean-based CDR projects. Key themes include:

  • Building trust through transparent, science-based MRV

  • Ensuring ecological integrity through site selection and risk management

  • Engaging with governance and regulatory developments early

ONC welcomes the release of this work and shares its emphasis on scientific rigour, environmental responsibility, and clear communication. As we continue building our own MRV protocols in partnership with WhaleX, contributions like this help set the tone for high-integrity innovation across the sector.
